Keep Cool in the Kitchen this Summer

Keep Cool in the Kitchen this Summer

This summer, keep your home cool and your energy costs low. Whether you’re firing up the grill outdoors or turning up the oven inside, there are several ways to reduce energy AND stay cool.

See how these energy-saving cooking and food prep tips from the Department of Energy can help:

  • Limit oven pre-heating and keep the oven door closed. Did you know that the temperature in the oven drops every time you open the door?
  • Cover food in your refrigerator to protect your compressor and limit moisture evaporation. And don’t forget to dust the coils on the back of the appliance each year to further reduce energy usage.
  • Skip the oven. From instant pots to air fryers to microwaves, there are many ways to cook without turning the oven up on the hottest days. Speaking of which….

Grilling is also a great way to save money and energy during the summer months.

  • Keep your grill in a well-ventilated area away from the house, deck railings, and nearby shrubbery.
  • Prep your food (wash veggies, season meat) and have everything ready to go once you start the grill.
  • Only light the burners you need to save on propane use. Even better, consider installing a  natural gas grill, no worries about replacing the tank and a great choice for the environment compared to a charcoal grill.
  • Just like your oven, keep your lid to the grill covered while you are cooking to save energy.
  • Don’t waste energy by leaving your grill running once you’ve finished cooking. Make sure it is completely off, including the on/off valve.

Remember, you can still enjoy your favorite summer foods without the oven - even baked goods. Check out this delicious grilled apple pie recipe for your next barbeque.
