How to Save Energy All Summer Long

How to Save Energy All Summer Long

What comes to mind when you think of summer? Fireworks? BBQs? Travel? Regardless of your plans for the holiday, there are several ways you and your family can save energy, while having fun.

Planning a road trip? Whether it's visiting a state park, amusement park, or camping with family and friends, millions of Americans will hit the road this summer. Consider ways to save on fuel by traveling smart. Turn off your vehicle while sitting idle. Reduce extra weight on your roof rack by storing items in the trunk whenever possible. Avoid aggressive driving and high speeds. And most importantly, prepare and plan ahead. Check out AAA’s best tips for road travel this season.

Hosting the holiday BBQ? Skip the oven and grill outdoors to save energy and money this summer. Planning an outdoor event also reduces demand on your air conditioning unit. You can also beat the heat with a no cook meal of salads, sandwiches, fruit salad and ice cream. Give your appliances an even bigger break by storing cold beverages and foods in a cooler or ice chest to avoid the constant refrigerator door opening and closing once your guests arrive.

Ready for fireworks? Firework sales in 2023 reached nearly $400 million in the U.S. It requires a significant amount of light, sound and heat energy to launch a firework display. This year, consider going to your local fireworks celebration vs. setting up your own display at home. Not only is it safer, but it's fun, cost-effective, and better for the environment. But if you are setting off fireworks and sparklers at home, be sure to keep children away from them; keep a water source close by in case of fire; and light just one firework at a time. Consult the Consumer Product Safety Commission for more tips on firework safety this summer.
