The holidays are a time to celebrate, visit loved ones, and recharge. In the workplace, the season often represents a time for vacation, more remote work, or an office closure until the new year.
Conserving energy at work, particularly during a long period when the office is not in use, is just as important as saving energy at home. So before you log off for the rest of the year, review the checklist below to see how you and your coworkers can share in the gift of energy efficiency – and develop new habits that will start you off on the right foot in 2025.
- Turn your computer off and switch off all power strips
- Unplug all devices, chargers, desk lamps, coffee makers, microwaves, printers, scanners, and photocopiers
- Lower temperatures, but do not turn the heat off completely
- Skip sleep mode and give your devices a break by shutting down altogether until you’re back at work
- Shut off all lights, including holiday décor lighting
- Close windows and blinds to minimize heat loss
- Permanently remove any space heaters (not only do they use a lot of energy, but they are also a potential fire hazard)
Whether you work from the office or from home, there are many ways to save energy while you enjoy your holiday break. It may only take a few minutes to complete this checklist, but the cost savings and good habits will last a lifetime. Happy Holidays!
