The average American family washes about 300 loads of laundry each year! Save energy and money with these helpful tips:
- Wash your clothes in cold water if possible.
- Wash only full loads of laundry or use the appropriate water level or load size selection on the washing machine.
- Be sure not to over-dry clothes, and use the dryer’s moisture sensor if it has one, to avoid over-drying.
- Clean the lint trap in the dryer before every load of laundry.
- Dry only full loads of laundry, or reduce drying time for partial loads.
- Combine loads made up of similar fabrics so items will all dry at the same rate.
- In warmer seasons, run the dryer at night to keep the house cooler during the day.
If you’re in the market for a new washer, ENERGY STAR certified clothes washers use about 25% less energy and 33% less water than regular washers; you can save even more with an ENERGY STAR certified washer/dryer pair.
FYI: If every clothes washer purchased in the U.S. was ENERGY STAR certified, we could save more than $3.3 billion each year and prevent more than 19 billion pounds of annual greenhouse gas emissions, equal to the emissions from more than 1.8 million vehicles.
